The drug was developed to treat conditions that cause acid at the bottom of the stomach. AstraZeneca's Nexium has been available as generics since the patent for Nexium was granted to Merck & Co. in 1999.
According to the FDA, Nexium is chemically distinct from Nexium 1, and has not been approved for use in the United States. The drug is classified as a "selective beta-blocker," which is a class of drugs that includes albuterol, digoxin, doxazosin, terazosin, and others. The patent for Nexium was granted to Merck in 1999.
